How Brian Austin Green ruined Megan Fox's career

Megan Fox had all the makings of a mega-star: she's one of the most beautiful people on the planet, she oozes charisma, and she's been a marquee name on two franchises. So what happened? Arguably, her marriage to Brian Austin Green hindered her progress.

Fox reportedly wanted to move past the generic "hot chick" roles and get meatier parts, but Green wanted her to keep up the status quo. A source told People, "Megan has always been career-oriented and noted because she was so beautiful. Now she is being recognized for her talent, and like anyone else with Hollywood ambitions, she wants to pursue those options." She compromised briefly, but it wasn't enough for Green. The timing is also important: like it or not, Hollywood is a sexist and ageist place. Green married Fox in her prime movie-making years and expected her to fold to his demands.

Sources told People that Green wanted Fox to settle down into domestic life and quit acting in favor of full time motherhood. "Megan is young and hot and sought after for work, and she is eager to move ahead in her career," the insider said. "Brian wants more of her time than she can allow. She was overwhelmed with the children and her husband's expectations, which got in the way of work responsibilities. They had many disagreements and arguments about her time at home, which led to problems."

Fox confessed to Ellen DeGeneres that both her pregnancies were unplanned, and it affected her ability to do her job. Her pregnancy was especially tough on the set of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014). "[It's] an action movie and requires a lot of running and jumping and stunts—anyone that's been pregnant knows your first trimester can be pretty rough and you're nauseous all day long," she said. "The producers would come see me in the morning in the makeup trailer and I would be clinging to a box of saltines…and I was just constantly on the verge of vomiting.

While marrying Green could've hurt Fox's career, a relationship with a star on her level or above could've aided her in climbing the Hollywood ladder. Sure, Fox isn't Angelina Jolie, but Green is much further from Brad Pitt: his biggest role was in the '90s, after which he starred in a series of failed pilots and had an aborted rap career. Their red carpet power was limited to solely her own.

Fox and Green got together when she was just 18 years old. As a result, she may have felt pressure not just from Hollywood, but from her own husband, to maintain her youthful good looks forever. Though she denies getting work done, if you have eyes, you can see that there's something different about her appearance now than from just a few years ago. A plastic surgeon who hasn't treated Fox told Radar Online, "Megan appears to have had some cosmetic procedures to her face. While she has probably not had anything major, I suspect that she has had a nose refinement and some facial fillers." Fox's taut face was pretty distracting in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the ability to emote is a job requirement as an actress. If Green made her feel insecure about her appearance, it indirectly made her unable to work.

TMZ reports that Green requested spousal support in his divorce filing from Fox, citing his inability to work as a result of suffering vertigo after a car accident. Green didn't get much work before the fender bender, either, making Fox the primary breadwinner. The pressure for money may have influenced Fox to take roles in less-than-stellar films—and may have influenced her decision to reconcile with Michael Bay for some quick paychecks instead of holding out for better movies. (Remember what happened to Nicolas Cage's career when he did that?)

A lot of stars hate the paparazzi, but most regard them as a necessary evil in order to stay relevant. In 2012, Green and Fox got sued after Green allegedly attacked a photographer who tried snapping photos of the couple vacationing in Hawaii. Fox's most valuable asset is her appearance. If she can never be photographed, her visibility, literally and figuratively, will drop to the point where she may not even be able to get guest starring roles on New Girl anymore.
