"Miracle" - car crash leads to woman becoming pregnant - despite having menopause ten years earlier

A car crash victim has been dubbed a “medical miracle” after traumatic injuries caused her body to “reboot” – reversing the menopause and allowing her to have the baby she always dreamed of.

When nurse Kate Mansbridge, now 43, was hit by a car on a cycling holiday in France she was so badly injured she needed a dozen major operations and was told she might never walk again.

Doctors were amazed she survived the impact which shattered bones in her legs and pelvis and caused brain injuries prompting a stroke.

Yet, incredibly, she says the crash, which left her on the brink of death, has also saved her life.

In a rare and remarkable turn of events, it led Kate’s body, which had gone through the menopause when she was only 27 years old, to restart itself, allowing her to conceive just three years after the accident.

Now a proud mum, the Emergency Department nurse at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, where she was treated by her work colleagues, says: “People tell me it’s a miracle and I know it is.

“At 27 years old I had a fertility check and doctors broke the news to me that I was menopausal and it had left me unable to have children.

“Being told I was unable to conceive a child was a huge loss, but I had a full life and I came to terms with the fact I’d never be a mother.

“Then nearly dying in an accident changed everything. While on the one hand, my legs were smashed to pieces and I was told I’d never walk again, on the other, the most extraordinary and incredible thing happened.
