The General Manager, Kwara Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA), Mr Joseph Adefila said on Friday that efforts were ongoing to build more public toilets across the state in order to curb the menace of open defecation.
Adefila who disclosed this in Ilorin, emphasized that it was necessary for the government to provide more toilet facilities.
"We are aware of the menace of open defecation and the threat it poses to the health of the people.
"So, efforts are on to build more public toilets across the state to complement the ones we have already built.
"This is because more people are entering the town; as such, the ratio of people to one toilet has increased. So, we have to get something done as soon as possible.
"It has become binding on the government to provide toilet facilities to prevent outbreak of diseases,’’ Adefila said.
He, however, noted that there has been enlightenment programmes to educate people on the need to shun open defecation and make use of the few available public toilets. (NAN)
